As we close our fiscal year (June 30, 2013) we plan to continue support for our Diocese Mission Project. Thanks to everyone who helped in any way this past year. A new commitment will be made in support of this project which will include Sisters Compensation, Pastoral support, The Radio Station and Youth, Students and Religious Education.
The next preparation class for parents and godparents who wish to baptize their infants or children (under age 7) will be Saturday, July 6th, 9:30am – 12 noon in the John of the Cross Room at St. Patrick. Please contact the St. Patrick Parish Office (525-1602) to pre-register.
Both the first reading and the Gospel remind us powerfully that every breath we take is a gift from God. How conscious am I of this first and most precious gift? Am I a good steward of the life and time with which I have been blessed?
DeSales Football team fundraiser to benefit Walla Walla Catholic Charities in the Assumption Parking Lot on June 9th after Sunday Masses.
We plan to discuss changes to our normal August School Supply Project. There are 249 unaccompanied youth in the district. Many are just one step away from being or are homeless. Please come and give input at our next meeting on Tuesday, June 18th at 7:00 pm at Assumption Parish Hall.
Stream Side Restoration – Dave Konen will donate and deliver brick edgers and gravel to put the walking path in place thru stream side planting. Puller Brothers has donated wood chips which Dave Konen will deliver. Watch for a work party in April to put these together. Nancy Wenzel obviously has a full plate with final steps so if you would like to take charge of the stream side path call her at 629-2863.
Please visit assumptiongardens.weebly.com to view the Tri-Parish gardens being planned on the Assumption grounds. Watch for future planting dates in October – much help is needed to make this a success. Also, come see the progress the vegetable garden is having.
Take action today! Legislators came back to Olympia on Monday, May 13 for a 30 day special session. The state House and Senate are required to pass a budget, and now is the time to make sure they fund programs to help poor and struggling people! Find out more at the Catholic Advocacy Network.
Check out the wide selection of books at the parish Library. There is also a small selection for Young Readers. Books checked out, need to be returned in six weeks. Many thanks to the contributors of the library and to the ladies who have worked many long hours to share the wonderful new books with you.
FOOD: The month of April was the lowest number of pounds of food (915) donated since we begin keeping track. You should be aware that the Farm Bill which contains money for the food stamp program now referred to as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will most likely provide less money then in prior years and that means hungry people will depend more on St. Vincent De Paul, Food Pantry and Salvation Army distribution centers for food. Please use the cash envelopes from the back of church or bring a food item every week.
Once again a natural disaster has struck a part of our nation – and once again our compassion calls us to faith-filled action! In response to the tornado in Oklahoma, parishioners are encouraged to make a generous contribution to a special Tornado Relief Fund established through Catholic Charities Spokane. You are invited to place earmarked contributions in the collection basket at Mass or mail them to “Tornado Relief Fund-CCS,” P.O. Box 2253, Spokane, WA 99210-2253. Our parishes will take up a special collection for this fund at all the masses on the weekend of June 8th & 9th. Please keep in prayers, those who have lost loved ones and property, as a result of this terrible disaster.
Key budget issues needed to work out during the special session include funding for safety net programs such as Housing and Essential Needs for the Aged, Blind and Disables programs as well as Working Connections Child Care, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families and the Housing Trust Fund. The bishops of Washington State continue to stress the need that legislators maintain an “adequate safety net to programs that server the most vulnerable.”
Fall registration for next year’s Religious Education program will begin in late August. Watch the bulletin, church posters, this website, and emails from the Religious Education Office for more information.
