The Archdiocese of St. Paul/Minneapolis has informed Bishop Cupich that the Reverend Clarence Vavra of the same Archdiocese was hired by Washington State as a chaplain at the Walla Walla State Penitentiary in the Fall of 1986. While his contract was for a full year, it appears from written records that he resigned the chaplain position on December 29, 1986, and left the State of Washington shortly thereafter. During that period of time, there is some indication that he celebrated Mass on weekends at St. Patrick’s Parish in Walla Walla and resided in the rectory as part of his compensation for parish ministerial services. This information is relevant because the Archdiocese of St. Paul/Minneapolis recently published that there is a substantiated claim of child sexual abuse against the Reverend Vavra. While Vavra’s known abuse did not take place in Washington State, it is the policy of the Diocese of Spokane to inform parishioners when it receives information about known perpetrators who have served within the boundaries of our diocese. Anyone who has been abused by this priest or knows of child sexual abuse by this priest during his time in Walla Walla, should immediately contact the Victims Assistance Coordinator of the Diocese of Spokane, Roberta Smith, at (509) 353-0442 or (509) 998-8340.
