Dear Friends in Christ,
Everyone likes a story. We listen intently, often finding ourselves unsuspectingly mirrored in its narration. The same is true in the telling of the story of our Diocese, about what has transpired among us over time. That story is not about an imaginary «them» – it is about us, we are the Diocese. The story is of our own making, under the grace of God and the promptings of the Great Holy Spirit who moves in the hearts of all those who walk the face of the planet.
…With that awareness I invite you to read this book,Children of the Sun, published to note the Centenary of our Diocese. We carry our name proudly, «Spokane» — not the name of our largest city but the name of a people in thirteen counties who form a single community of faith under the leadership of a Successor of the Apostles.
…In reading this narrative of our past, may we all be inspired with confidence as we turn now to the future, to our next one hundred years. Literally, God only knows what story-tellers in times hence will speak or write about us who in our own day and age receive the Gospel as the children of God, still a people upon whom that same grace shines which blessed our ancestors in faith. We walk in their footsteps, striving to be faithful to the way of Jesus, and continuing to give witness in our institutions, and above all in the witness of our lives, that God is with us.
Sincerely yours in Christ
Most Reverend Blase J. Cupich
Bishop of Spokane
